Section 3 Evaluation

There will be one in-class midterm exam and a cumulative final exam. Both exams will be given during the regular class meeting time in our usual classroom. The exams are scheduled as follows:

All exams are completed individually and are governed by the Academic Honor Code. The policy for a missed exam is described in Subsection 4.5.

Active participation is essential for success in this course. Students are expected to attend all classes, contribute to discussions, and engage in collaborative activities. This includes asking questions, sharing insights, and working effectively during in-class exercises or group work.

Constructive engagement allows students to deepen their understanding of the material, learn from their peers, and build essential problem-solving and communication skills that will be valuable in future coursework and careers.

Participation is not a separate grade category. It is an expectation of the course, and its benefits are reflected in your performance on the quizzes and exams.

Homework assignments are a critical component of the course. They are designed to reinforce the concepts covered in lectures and to give you practice writing careful mathematical arguments. Homework is neither collected nor graded directly; instead, the quizzes are drawn from the assigned problems. Collaboration is encouraged, but you should be able to reproduce every solution on your own.

Quizzes will be administered in class periodically to assess understanding of key concepts and ensure students are keeping up with the material. Quizzes are completed individually and are governed by the Academic Honor Code. These will be short, focused assessments designed to reinforce learning and identify areas for improvement. They are an opportunity to practice applying course concepts and receive feedback on your progress.

There are no make-up quizzes. To account for illness, travel, and other unforeseen circumstances, the two lowest quiz scores will be dropped.

The two dropped scores are meant to cover ordinary absences. If a circumstance such as an extended illness, a family emergency, or a University-sponsored activity causes you to miss more than two quizzes, notify me in advance for planned absences, or within three class days of your return otherwise, per Policy 2206. Documentation may be required. Because such cases are unusual, accommodations are determined individually, but the same process and eligibility standard apply to every student.

Grades will be calculated using the weights below.

Letter grades will be assigned based on the scale below.
